About HP Software and Drivers
What is a driver?
A driver is a piece of software that connects your Windows operating system to hardware items that can be either internal to your device, or external – like a printer, graphics card, keyboard, webcam, etc.
If you don’t have the right driver installed:
- Your device might not work at all. E.g., your printer won’t print.
- Your device might work, but not correctly. E.g., slow graphics performance.
- You might lose access to some features of your device.
When might I need to install or update a driver?
- After installing new hardware.
- If a device stops working properly.
- When upgrading to a new version of your operating system.
- To improve performance.
What is a printer firmware update?
Your printer’s firmware is the built-in program that controls its functions, like:
- Receiving print commands from your computer.
- Controlling mechanical parts, like the motor or print heads, etc.
- Managing the supply of the ink or toner.
- Handling the network or wireless connection.
We release regular updates to the firmware to fix bugs, improve your print quality or speed, or add new features, like compatibility with new file formats.
Please note: You should never turn off the printer during an update.
What kind of software is available?
The software we offer will depend on your device, but it will include for example: security software updates and programs that help with the efficient running and maintenance of your device, like HP Power Manager or our support apps.
